Transfer Portal Round Up April
Transfer Portal Round Up is a portal recap for that month, the recap will give a brief explanations of who has left for the portal, where said player went if they commit within the month, and the moving on to additions with in that month and then a final grade. These will be organized by team in alphabetical order so if you are looking for a team, and can't see it at the top keep scrolling and you will find it.
Charleston Southern
Losses: No losses in the month of April
Gains: Jaylon Gibson, Derrick Harris Jr, Lamar Oden Jr, Daylen Berry
Jaylon Gibson: Former NC State forward whom transferred to UNC Greensboro while he didn't play at Greensboro he moved to Charleston Southern, while at NC State during his freshman season he averaged only just under 1 PPG and just under 1 RPG in just under 5 mins. During his sophomore season the stats didn't improve much only growing to 2.7 PPG and 2.7 RPG in 14 mins per game. This transfer I believe is just Charleston Southern taking a flyer on a former ACC talent who hasn't performed recently.
Derrick Harris Jr.: Former Georgia Southern guard, Derrick Harris was one of few bright spots on Georgia Southern this season. Playing in 24 games and only starting in two, he averaged over 5 PPG and 1 RPG, while the stats don't look impressive there was multiple games where Derrick Harris excelled in games with over 20 mins played he had an offensive rating over 105 in all games, when given minutes Derrick Harris has not disappointed, amazing get for Charleston Southern.
Lamar Oden Jr.: Incoming transfer from Drexel, Lamar Oden saw his minutes decrease this past season at Drexel his stellar junior season should be the season you look at when evaluating him. In his junior season at Drexel he averaged 8.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG and just 1 APG in just shy of 29 MPG. He provided a well needed role to a Drexel team that was in a heated battle for the CAA title that season and he showed flashes of that same talent this season vs teams like Winthrop and Queens. This transfer is an amazing move for Lamar to get more minutes and hopefully better showcase his talent.
Daylen Berry: Incoming transfer from Charlotte, Daylen Berry saw the court in short spurts at Charlotte, this past season he averaged 1.6 PPG and 0.7 RPG but showed flashes of his talent in games against Liberty, and Duke get 10 points against Liberty, and 6 against Duke. He should see a minute increase this coming season at Charleston Southern potentially breaking into the starting rotation. If he can turn those flashes into long term sustained excellence he could be an important piece to this Charleston Southern roster this season.
Overall Grade: B
Gardner-Webb
Losses: No losses in the month of April
Gains: Anthony Selden, Jamaine Mann
Anthony Selden: Coming back to Gardner-Webb after one season at Rice, Selden comes back to finish his career right where it started. Selden when he went to Rice saw a loss of minutes something he hadn't ran into during his time at Gardner-Webb. In games he played for at Rice, when he received minutes he did make the most of them including 17 at Texas, 18 vs Harvard, 14 in a win at Memphis. This transfer fills a hole in the roster left by both DQ Nicholas and Quest Aldridge both leaving.
Jamaine Mann: Another MARFO get for Gardner Webb, Jamaine Mann has been cashing in on his frequent flyer miles are leaving Gardner Webb after his freshman season he went to Vanderbilt, the after not much playing time at Vanderbilt he then went to Georgia State and saw an immediate increase in playing time, moving from 27.7% of minutes at Vanderbilt to 67.3% of minutes at Georgia State. After his 22-23 season where he averaged 10.5 PPG and 5.1 RPG, he then say his minutes slashed to only 22.5% of minutes, thus leading to his transfer back to Gardner-Webb. Jamaine Mann adds a needed body to back court at Gardner-Webb and should see his minutes dramatically increase at Gardner-Webb those leading to higher output and production.
Overall Grade: B-
High Point
Losses: Cade Potter, Duke Miles, Denzel Hines, Pablo Dziuba
Gains: Chase Johnston, Bobby Pettiford Jr, Jeremy Foumena
Chase Johnston: The two time transfer, first from Stetson then Florida Gulf Coast, only played in nine games last season due to injury but in the three season before he was a consistent starter for both Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast playing in 80 games and starting 56 and playing 81.4, 84.3 and 63% of minutes in each of the last three seasons. In his college career he averages 13.4 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 1.3 APG, on over 40% shooting from the field and over 37% from behind the arc. If he recovered fully from the hip injury this might be the best transfer in the Big South and maybe all of mid major college basketball.
Bobby Pettiford: Former Top 100 prospect and Kansas player by the way of ECU has now made his way to High Point. While he has not performed at Kansas and not much at ECU, he showed flashes on what he could be vs teams like UNCW, Georgia Southern, and Northeastern. Bobby is a boom or bust player, he seems to either drop 15+ on efficient shooting or 2 points on 1-5 shooting. If Coach Huss can make it to where he can either level off the erratic play or give him a smaller role he can very well be an amazing get in the portal.
Jeremy Foumena: One of the best young big men in the transfer portal, Jeremy Foumena originally from Rhode Island, before committing to High Point he had conversations from Arizona State, Colorado State, and LSU among others. Last season at Rhode Island he averaged 5.3 PPG and 3.5 RPG, but played 24 minutes per game on a subpar Rhode Island squad, with the support squad he will have at High Point, he will be a scary player and High Point just became a SCARY mid major program with this addition.
Overall Grade: B
Longwood
Losses: Saxby Sunderland, Mateo Esmeraldo, Symon Zapala
Gains: Colby Garland, K.J McClurg, Kyrell Luc, DJ Jefferson
Colby Garland: One of the Drake transfers that did not follow the DeVries family to Morgantown was Colby Garland, though he didn't move too far from them, going to Virginia. In his freshman year Colby played in 19.5 minutes averaging 5.7 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 2.3 APG. He will definitely have time to develop behind this stacked back court at Longwood if he chooses to not dart into the portal next season. Very good long term get.
KJ McClurg: One of the top division two players in the portal, KJ is a sharp shooting guard out of Morgantown, VA who most recently played for California University of Pennsylvania. KJ started his career at New Hampshire but redshirted then transferred to California University of Pennsylvania where he played the past two season in his RS Freshman year he averaged 13.8 PPG on 38.6% from the field and over 38% from behind the arc. His next season he took a massive leap forward averaging 22.6 PPG on over 53% from the field and 42.1% from behind the arc. KJ McClurg is massive shooting threat that Longwood needed only being ranked 177th in 3 point shooting this last season.
Kyrell Luc: The two time transfer from St. Bonaventure by way of Holy Cross saw his minutes cut drastically this last season but the two seasons before that he averaged over 80% of minutes in games (81.5% and 81.9% respectively). His first season at Holy Cross he played in 31 games starting in all 31 in his true freshman year averaging 13 PPG, 3.6 RPG and 2.4 APG. Then he took a step up in competition going to the A10 with St. Bonaventure where in his true sophomore he played and started in all 32 games averaging 11.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 4.3 APG. If Kyrell Luc and channel his younger playstyle again he could be someone to watch in the Big South especially with the roster that Longwood will field next season.
DJ Jefferson: Former Top 100 and 4 Star recruit from Tennessee DJ took his redshirt in the 2022-23 season then saw action in only one game in this most recent season making one three and getting two rebounds vs Tennessee Tech. He played in Tennessee's summer trip starting in one game and averaging 7 PPG. He missed a few practices this season for "having not lived up to what we want him to do and all the facets of the program." as stated by Rick Barnes during Tennessee's media day. DJ Jefferson has the talent to succeed at Longwood, and definitely has to coaching staff and will have the playing time to perform like the other Tennessee transfer have in this conference.
Overall Grade: B+
PresbyterianLosses: Marquis Bennett, Samage Teel
Gains: No gains in the month of April
Overall Grade: D
Radford
Losses: No losses in month of April
Gains: Jonas Sirtautus, Jarvis Moss, David Early, Tony Felder
Jonas Sirtautus: Transfer for the University of Wyoming, born in Lithuania came from the NBA Global Academy, he did not touch the floor his freshman season before transferring at Radford. During his club career in Lithuania he touched the court sparingly only averaging 3.7 PPG and 1.4 APG.
Jarvis Moss: The two time transfer beginning at Stanford and then spending one season at Davidson, while Jarvis could not find the court at either university, he was ranked the 63rd SG in his recruiting class where he held offers from Stanford, New Mexico, Samford, and Penn. He definitely has the talent to succeed and hopefully getting more playing time will lead to that.
David Early: Another two time transfer from Radford, this time from Tennessee Tech but David began his career at Marshall and did not find the court much, he then transferred to Tennessee Tech and immediately broke into the starting lineup starting all 17 games he played averaging 14.3 PPG, 2.5 RPG on 45.7% of field and 36.9% from three. Amazing transfer both sides, and the first really impactful get for Radford this cycle.
Tony Felder: Former 16U teammate of Donovan Clingan, Tony Felder was drawing attention all the way back in 2020, well now he's drawing more attention after transferring for the second time after starting at both Stonehill and VMI, Felder is now headed to Radford, throughout his career he has started all but 5 games, averaging 11.2 PPG, 3.0 APG, and 2.5 RPG. While his shooting number leaving something to be desired, he is definitely an impact guard that Radford needed to have a control on their offense.
Overall Grade: B
UNC Asheville
Losses: Evan Johnson
Gains: Aidan Rubio, Justin Wright, Jordan Marsh, Sage Tolentino
Aidan Rubio: Sophomore Transfer from Central Michigan started 7 games this season while playing in 27. Aidan Rubio was originally at Macomb CC averaged 12 PPG, 2.3 APG and 4.9 RPG helping lead Macomb to the NJCAA title game, he then transferred to the aforementioned Central Michigan where he averaged 6.8 PPG, 2.2 RPG and 0.9 APG in over 24 minutes. He did show flashes in games against Ball State, Ohio, Louisiana-Monroe and Akron. This is an amazing project player who could definitely be the next star at UNC Asheville.
Justin Wright: Two time transfer whose career started at NC Central then took a one season start at Loyola Marymount, Justin Wright started only 12 games this past season after starting all 30 the season before at NC Central, while only starting 12 games, Justin still made his impact felt averaging 11.1 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 1.9 APG at Loyola Marymount, including a 22 point and 9 rebound game vs Pacific, 19 points at Santa Clara, Justin Wright if he can break into the starting lineup this season at UNC Asheville will be a contender for 1st Team Big South, and maybe Big South Player of the Year.
Jordan Marsh: During his freshman season at App State, Jordan Marsh showed his true potential while only starting one game, he played in 32 averaging 6.2 PPG, 1.6 RPG and 1.2 APG on 41.3% shooting, he had some amazing games vs ULL putting up 23 PTS and Toledo putting up 17 PTS, he had multiple other 10+ point games. For this transfer to make sense he either must be here for the long hall or thinks he can beat everyone else on the team for a starting spot. Either way I believe he has the talent to be the guard of the future of UNC Asheville or potentially move to a P5 or higher mid major program if he feels he'd like to do so.
Sage Tolentino: Former 3 star Cincinnati player, Sage only played 17 minutes the past two seasons at Cincinnati and he should see those numbers massively increase at UNC Asheville, while much isn't known about Sage in the college basketball space, he definitely could be very good, every site had him as a 3 star player he held offers from Auburn, Kansas and Cincinnati. If he can perform anything like the other former P5 big who transferred to UNC Asheville, this will be an amazing move.
Overall Grade: A-
USC Upstate
Losses: Trae Broadnax, Riley Parker, Britain Harris, Patrick Iriel, Jorge Ochoa, Floyd Rideau Jr.
Gains: Kanye Jones, Daniel Helterhoff
Kanye Jones: Transfer coming from Buffalo after playing only nine games in the past season starting three, Kanye Jones is a promising player while his shooting numbers weren't the best last season at Buffalo, he still averaged 8 PPG with 2.9 RPG in only 17.8 minutes per game. Kanye Jones started his career at Boston College where he didn't find the court before transferring to Buffalo. I believe Kanye Jones made a good move here to USC Upstate and will fit right into the roster, especially with the huge roster exodus.
Daniel Helterhoff: NAIA transfer from Our Lady of the Lake, Daniel Helterhoff will likely be one of the top players on a depleted USC Upstate roster, in his two seasons at Our Lady of the Lake Daniel was the starting center, standing at 6'10" he has decent size for the low major level especially in the Big South. In his two seasons at the NAIA level he averaged 10.4 PPG and 4.9 RPG. He will need to provide an immediate impact for USC Upstate to have any chance against the top teams in the conference.
Chico Johnson: Following his coach from Drake, Chico Johnson is a transfer from Drake who sat out this past season taking his redshirt. Chico was a ranked ESPN recruit coming out of high school being ranked the #9 player out of the state of Ohio and the 47th best point guard in the state. It seems Chico is here for the long term or at least while Coach Richter is here at Upstate.
Overall Grade: C-
Winthrop
Losses: Kelton Talford
Gains: Logan Duncomb, Bryce Baker
Logan Duncomb: Former big man from Indiana then Xavier, Logan Duncomb has now found his way to Winthrop to play with Coach Prosser. A former top 75 recruit committed to Indiana who in 2023 after going to Xavier chose to step away from the game of basketball for health reasons, now Logan is giving basketball a second chance. An amazing player with amazing talent, now teamed up with a Coach that I believe can extract the most out of him, I could see a Tyon Grant-Foster style comeback coming from Logan this season.
Bryce Baker: After being a fringe starter/bench player for two seasons at ODU, Bryce Baker now is headed to Winthrop. In two seasons at ODU he averaged 4 PPG and 1.9 RPG in just over 16 minutes per game. Most of his points come from behind the arc, I'll be it on limited shots but 124 of his 158 shots were behind the arc, if Bryce Baker can becomes a 3pt specialist at Winthrop he could be a deadly addition to the lineup but if not then this transfer likely won't work out.
Overall Grade: C
