Transfer Portal Deep Dive: High Point Scotty Washington
As the Transfer Portal, SearchSZN, and all of the other offseason festivities comes to an end. It’s time to start looking forward, WHILE also looking back as we dive into some of the new players for ALL 9 Big South teams.
For analysis: I will pick 3 games, 1 game that stood out as a GOOD game, 1 game that stood out as a BAD game, and 1 games that was average.
(If I can’t find 3 games, I will then go to portal film/shot charts and analytics)
Scotty Washington Background:
Beginning his career at Cal Baptist, playing two seasons after redshirting his freshman season, Scotty was an impact from the second he stepped on the court in his RS-FR season playing 28 games, starting 2.
In those 28 games, Scotty has 5 double digits performances including 18 points off the bench vs a Dillon Jones led Weber State squad.
In his sophomore season, his final at CBU, Washington stepped it up again averaging over 8 PPG across 33 games, 18 being starts.
After two seasons at Cal Baptist, Scotty made the move to Cal State Northridge, where again, he took another leap forward, starting all 33 games averaged 14.6 PPG, 3.2 RPG and 1.3 APG, helping lead Cal State Northridge to their FIRST NIT appearance in school history, and 4 total postseason appearance at the D1 level.
Scotty Washington Game Notes/Review:
Scotty Washington Good Game: 11/06/24 at Le Moyne
Stats: 21 points (7-12 from the field, 3-6 from 3), 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Notes:
Really good defender, reads passing lanes with ease.
Strong mid range shooter, excels at the “conference” logo range
Really gritty player in the paint, just plays with a HIGH level of intensity.
Very good free throw shooter, someone to MAKE SURE is in the game late.
Stellar 3PT shooter, especially in a catch and shoot scenario.
Scotty Washington “Average” Game: SE Melbourne 2023 (no other games online)
Stats: No Stats Provided
Notes:
Puts a lot zip on his passes.
Really crafted, and LONG player, gets to the rim with very few steps.
Does play stand off-ish defense, which isn’t too much of an issue for a off ball player.
Really shifty to create space in the paint, you can’t bite on ANY fakes but also can’t stay on your feet too long.
Scotty Washington “Bad” Game: 12/18/24 at USC
Stats: 2 points (0-6 from the field, 0-4 from 3), 2 rebounds, 1 assist
Notes:
Really good pick and roll guard, both at creating and at getting down hill to the rim.
Can lack the foresight of where his passes can end up.
Really good paint/post defender for being 6’4 180.
Doesn’t hesitate to shoot, both for the better AND for worse.

Shot Charts (compared to D’Maurian Williams):
Comparison Notes:
D’Maurian was the 3rd highest 2PT FGA Per 40 for HPU this past season and no one was even really close to Scotty’s shooting with how even it’s spread out.
The only GLARING cold spot for Scotty is at the rim, and with CSUN’s tallest player being 6’9” I see that cold zone getting a little warmer if not turning into a hot zone.
I don’t see Scotty’s shot diet staying the same, HPU runs a very little Mid Range offense, I would openly expect something closer to D’Maurians’s diet this season, but I would love to be proven wrong.
On/Off Analytics:
Notes:
CSUN was clearly better with Washington on the court, especially offensively going from 52.5% EFG to 49.7%, The ORTG dropping from 111.8 to 109.9, but also defense dropped a light bit going from 104 to 104.2.
Nothing really screams, MASSIVE ISSUE for me, everything that drops at CSUN with him off the court, is either small drops or something that his position has very little impact in.
Scotty Washington Final Thoughts:
I will be honest, Scotty Washington (and others in hindsight) is why I wanted to start this series. I thought his shot diet was really 1/1 and just truly amazing and truly is sign of the conclusion I will make at the end of this.
Then as I dived deeper I noticed, hey he’s a good defender, hey he’s a good playmaker for the SG/SF spot, and I thought, who stops him from winning the POY.
He has: The highest offensive floor on High Point, one of the higher defensive floors, and is a good enough of a playmaker to be POY.
If I were righting my Big South Preview, I would have Scotty as my Big South Player of the Year, but I will give myself a little room and say.
I believe Scotty will be AT LEAST an All Conference Honorable Mention.
