Must transfer to Big South School (Duh!)
Can't be a player who withdrew from the portal
Honorable Mentions:
Jordan Marsh - UNC Asheville (Transfer from Appalachian State)
Anthony Selden - Gardner-Webb (Transfer from Rice)
Top 5:
5. Lamar Oden - Charleston Southern (Transfer from Drexel)
Lamar Oden from Drexel, his past season was a down season for the former Drexel star. He's holding on to hope for a career resurgence and it very well could happen with the talent Charleston Southern has retained and brought in via HS commits, the transfer portal and recruiting their own roster to stay.
The one thing holding Lamar Oden back is the one thing that makes excel, he's a plug and play players, he does a lot things amazingly but doesn't stand out at ANY ONE thing, he's a good scorer, good rebounder and good defender but doesn't excel at any of them.
4. Chace Davis - Radford (Transfer from Maryland Eastern Shore)
Chace Davis is a guard from Maryland Eastern Shore, in his career at UMES he has seen been a fringe starter all three years, playing in 86 games and starting 38 of them. The former MEAC All Freshman Team member is headed to Radford this upcoming season. With a loaded depth chart Chace will first need to break into the starting fold, if he can do that his effective scoring will need to be prevalent for him to make an impact, Chace is an amazing scoring guard but isn't quite as effective at anything else. His lack of other resources and potential of being burried in the depth chart limits his ability to be higher on this list, but Chace has real potential to be a star this season at Radford.
3. D' Maurian Williams - High Point (Transfer from Texas Tech)
The transfer from Texas Tech is a former Gardner-Webb starter before making a short stop in Lubbock just to come back to the Big South, unfortunately in the state where everything is bigger, D' Maurian's role didn't get bigger. Last season Williams only saw the court in 7 games playing 1.2% of the minutes this season. When D' Maurian was in the Big South he excelled, in the 2021-22 season he was All Big South and during his freshman season he was on the All Big South Freshman Team. When Williams is on the court, he can be the #1 scorer, while also adding a rebounding threat and have above average ball control and court management. He was one of the best Big South players in 2021-22 and I believe we see a last hoorah at High Point, maybe not the level of his 21-22 season but better than the past two seasons.
2. Kyrell Luc - Longwood (Transfer from St. Bonaventure)
Luc a transfer guard from St. Bonaventure, saw his playing time go down after a stellar season in 2022-23 where he played and started 32 games creating both for himself and his teammates. In the season before he was Patriot League ROY and made the Patriot League All Freshman Team. Surrounded by a star cast of amazing shooters and star backcourt players, if Kyrell can crack the starting lineup and have the right cast around him Longwood could have the best guard and maybe the best team in the Big South.
1. Jeremy Foumena - High Point (Transfer from Rhode Island)
Now onto the player who I think is not only the player with the most breakout potential but is potentially the best Big South get in the entire portal. Jeremy Foumena a transfer center from Rhode Island played in 28 games last season for the Rams, while averaging 5.3 PPG and 3.5 RPG. The true freshman showed a lot of promise at Rhode Island last season and immediately took that promise to High Point to add himself to an already loaded roster with Juslin Bodo Bodo to create an absolutely formidable front court. If he can add to his performances from last season with this new found role in the lineup he could very well be in contention for Big South Player of the Year.
